Benilde student bags Animahenasyon grand prize

“Marianing,” the tale of a mysterious and unpredictable man with supernatural capabilities, is the animated short by De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (DLS-CSB) student Niko Salazar that bested all other entries in this year’s Animahenasyon Philippine Animation Festival, held at the DLS-CSB School of Design and Arts Campus in Manila.

An excerpt from a graphic novel, the film was the festival’s grand prize winner for 2012 and also claimed two major awards—the best student animated short for the 6-20 minutes category, and the Hero TV’s Choice Award. “Marianing” served as Niko’s final project for his degree in Animation from DLS-CSB.

The young animator did not expect to win in the acclaimed festival as it was his first time to participate. Salazar said that it was his mentors who encouraged him to submit his work. But more than that, he said that it was his love for art that really pushed him. “I guess it was the drive to create for the industry—to show something new. That’s what I wanted to do and Animahenasyon was the best avenue,” he said.

Now on its sixth year, the annual Animahenasyon festival is organized by the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) and features the best of Philippine animation through its multi-category competition. Since its inception, the festival continues to receive a growing number of submissions from students and professionals across the nation and from different countries as well.

The festival proves to be a platform for animators to showcase their work and reach a wider audience. It is especially valuable to students like Niko who are given opportunities to launch their young careers. “I feel very blessed and very lucky,” said Niko of the awards his film has received. “I feel like all the things I’ve done and worked hard for, (have been) exchanged with a very nice award.”

As an animator, Niko thrives on inspiration and is looking to continue improving. “Even though I won this award, I think that it’s very, very important that I need to move on with my craft and master my art.” Clearly determined to keep moving forward, Niko is already working on new projects with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) where he is an art director for a mixed medium theater play involving film, dance and animation. He also looks forward to possibly joining next year’s Animahenasyon should he come up with another project.

“We had a great turnout this year especially in terms of submissions,” said (Michael Kho Lim, executive director of ACPI and overall project director of Animahenasyon). “We especially had a lot of entries from other countries and partnerships with different foreign cultural agencies that we were able to feature animation works from around the world. We hope to continue this momentum in the coming years.”

Other winners in the festival for best animation in the professional division are: Dennis Sebastian’s “Kaleh At Mbaki” for Category A (1-5 minutes); and Benigno Caparas’ “Stream Engine Studios” for Category F (TVC/OBB/Demo Reel).

For the student division, best animation winners include Alexis Somes’ “Bakuna Ni Tutoy” for Categroy H (1-5 minutes); Marc Ericson Hidalgo’s “Ulan” for Category K (music video); and Roberto J. Oquias Jr.’s “Monskuara” for Category L (TVC/OBB/Demo Reel).

Winners of special awards include Giancarlo Chan Ng’s “Reversion” for Best in Technical Quality; Omar P. Aguilar’s “Oli Impan” for Best Regional Entry and Special Jury Prize. Other winners of the Special Jury Prize include Ado V. Ortiz’ “Shop Ni Kuya”, which also bagged the Audience Choice Award; Victor Ian M. Covarrubias’ “Bulador de Casa”; and Lucky F. Fandalian’s “Software Sentinels: The Antivirus.”
